Circumcision Celebration in Turkey: Stage, Sound & Light Guide

Planning a circumcision celebration in Turkey (sünnet düğünü)? Stage layout, sound for prayers and music, children's shows, lighting and safety explained.

Circumcision Celebration in Turkey: Stage, Sound & Light Guide

A circumcision celebration in Turkey, known as a sünnet düğünü, is one of the largest family events in Turkish culture. The boy wears a special outfit, often with a cape and hat, receives guests on a decorated seat or bed, and the extended family gathers for an afternoon and evening of music, food, children's entertainment and dancing. Many families living abroad return to their home town in Turkey for the occasion and ask a planner to organise it. This guide explains the technical side: stage layout, sound, lighting and safety for a day built around children.

What a circumcision celebration in Turkey needs technically

The programme, not the guest count, drives the technical plan. A typical celebration includes:

  • A low, decorated platform for the boy's seat, where guests greet him and take photos.
  • A low stage for a magician, animators or a children's show.
  • A stage or riser for live musicians or a DJ, plus a wide dance floor.
  • Sound for a prayer or religious recitation, speeches, the children's show and music.
  • Lighting and an LED screen for the evening part, the boy's entrance and photo slideshows.
  • Shade, power and cable safety for gardens and country venues.

Stage layout: seat platform, show stage and band

AreaTypical sizeHeight
Seat platform for the boy3 x 2 m to 3 x 3 m30–40 cm
Children's show stage4 x 3 m to 6 x 4 m40–60 cm
Band stage4 x 3 m to 6 x 4 m60–80 cm
DJ riser2 x 2 m to 3 x 2 m40–60 cm

For international planners, two cultural details matter for the layout. Guests usually come up to the boy one by one to congratulate him and pin gifts, often gold coins, on a sash, so the platform needs easy access and room for a queue. And the boy is the centre of the day, so his seat should face the main seating area and be well lit for photos from the afternoon onwards.

Keep the children's show stage low: young audiences sit on the floor right in front, and a 1 m stage forces them to look straight up. Keep the queue to the boy's seat separate from tables and the dance floor. Browse the platforms we supply on our stage rental Turkey page, and see our stage size guide for sizing logic.

Safety when the audience is mostly children

  1. Handrails on the back and sides of stages 60 cm and higher; wide, low steps with grab rails.
  2. Skirting that fully closes the space under the stage so children cannot crawl beneath it.
  3. Speaker stands ballasted and, where possible, out of reach; children kept away from the front of speakers.
  4. All cables in walkways covered with cable ramps, distribution boxes out of reach.
  5. Reasonable volume, especially during the daytime part.
  6. Cold sparks, confetti cannons and heavy fog used only away from children and with an operator. Our stage effects guide covers the options.

Sound: prayer, speeches, show and music

Many families open the celebration with a prayer or a recitation of the mevlit, a traditional religious poem. Music is switched off completely and the voice must reach every guest clearly and calmly, so one fixed microphone with a wireless spare is usually enough. The children's show works best with a headset microphone for the performer and show music played through the main system. In the evening, a live band, a drum and shawm duo or a DJ takes over; ask for the line-up, channel count and monitor needs in advance. One operator running all these sections from a single mixer keeps the day flowing without awkward silences. See our sound system rental in Turkey page for the systems available.

Lighting and LED screens from day to night

Afternoon garden celebrations only need light from dusk, which is exactly why lighting should be rigged, programmed and tested in daylight. In the evening, warm uplighting on trees and tables, a soft spot on the boy's seat, a follow spot for his entrance and moving heads for the dancing are typical; a gobo projecting his name is a popular touch. An LED screen is useful for a slideshow of his photos, cartoons during the children's show and live video in large venues; in daylight, LED is far more readable than a projector or TV.

Outdoor celebrations, power and travel

Many sünnet celebrations happen in summer when schools are closed, often in gardens, country wedding venues or village squares; a public square needs permission from the local municipality or village authority in advance. Plan canopies for shade over the seat platform and show stage, protect electronics from the sun, check power capacity or bring a silent generator, level the stage on grass and ballast decor and canopies against wind. BernStage dispatches crew and equipment from Istanbul to all 81 provinces of Turkey, which suits families celebrating in their home town; our nationwide stage rental guide explains the logistics.

A sample running order

Build in the morning and finish the sound check before guests arrive. Then: welcome with background music and the boy's seat lit, prayer or recitation with music off, children's show, dinner with low music and microphones ready for speeches, then live music and dancing until the agreed end time. Load-out starts only once children have left the area. If you would like the whole day planned, including decor and entertainment, our event organisation partner Ourspace can take it on with us.
